The inaugural Professional Football Mock Trade Competition at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) took place at the William S. Boyd School of Law on March 8-9, 2025. This event brought together 41 law students from across the nation to engage in trade negotiations with assigned professional teams and present their strategies to a panel of judges.

The competition allowed students to refine their skills and practice negotiation techniques in a hands-on, high-stakes environment. Participating schools included the University of Dayton School of Law, Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, the University of San Francisco School of Law, and the Boyd School of Law at UNLV. Industry experts from professional teams, sports agencies, law firms, and the media served as judges, providing insightful questions and feedback from a variety of perspectives.

The Sports and Entertainment Law Association (SELA) Executive Board worked diligently to create this competitive opportunity for students aspiring to work in sports and entertainment law. “This competition was established at an exciting time as Las Vegas continues to emerge as a global hub for sports and entertainment. It has been an honor initiating a competition that provides a platform for students interested in sports law and management who will shape the future of this industry,” said Kendrea Roby, President of SELA and a 3L. The legal community showed strong support for this student-driven initiative. Sponsors included Akerman LLP, Garman, Turner, Gordon, Justin and Anna Carley, Short & Stevens Law.

“I enjoyed being part of a competitive negotiation team and received great feedback from the judges,” said Josh Lozano, a 3L student from Boyd Law who was a member of the first-place team. “Unexpected trades and creative strategies played out throughout the weekend, and we had a lot of fun!”

For their efforts with the Mock Trade Competition and other educational events throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, SELA was awarded “Club of the Year” by the Boyd Law Student Bar Association.
