Boyd Law Students Champion Tenants’ Rights at the Legislature

Students in Boyd Law’s Tenants’ Rights Legal Residency (a partnership with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and the Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic) took their classroom advocacy straight to Carson City this past spring, making their mark on Nevada housing policy.
Residency students Alice Samberg and Kaycee Johnson Atherton joined Assemblymember Venicia Considine to present AB223, a bill designed to strengthen rental habitability protections. At the same time, classmates Alex Andreozzi, Heabin Pyo, and Ariana McConnell testified virtually from Las Vegas, sharing their perspectives on the importance of ensuring safe, livable housing for all Nevadans.
AB223 proposed a wide range of tenant-focused reforms, including creating a path for expedited relief when landlords fail to make necessary repairs, clarifying rental agreement requirements, expanding definitions of essential services, and improving remedies available to tenants facing uninhabitable living conditions. It also sought to give tenants reasonable time to gather belongings after ending a lease.
Though the bill passed the Legislature, it was ultimately vetoed by the Governor.
