National Black Law Students Association to Recognize Boyd Student

Each year, the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) selects six active members, one from each region, to serve as the Member of the Month. This year, the Western Region chose Boyd School of Law student Elisabeth Flemming for her outstanding service. Flemming was selected among nominations from 26 other law schools including Stanford, UCLA, and USC. She will be recognized on the NBLSA website and at the NBLSA National Convention held March 9-13 in Houston, Texas.

Elisabeth Flemming '11 was selected to represent the Western Region as NBLSA's Member of the Month.

Elisabeth Flemming was born and raised in Flint, Mich. She attended Grand Valley State University on a full academic scholarship and majored in accounting and taxation. She was also a member of Beta Alpha Psi, an academic fraternal organization, where she served on the Community Service Committee. While in college she was engaged in numerous tutoring and mentoring programs involving inner city youth. It was Flemming's experiences during her upbringing and continued involvement in community service that encouraged and motivated her to attend law school.

Flemming started her law career at the Boyd School of Law in August of 2008. She was elected president of the law school's chapter of BLSA in 2009 and 2010. As president, she sought to make the organization a supportive and encouraging environment for chapter members through various academic, social, and mentoring programs. To address the current disparities facing minorities in the community, she helped BLSA organize programs such as youth mentoring and tutoring at urban schools in Las Vegas, voter protection during the 2010 election, and continued work with the NAACP.

In addition, Flemming has worked with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, has been an extern for the Clark County Public Defender's office, and is currently working at Zuffa, LLC d/b/a Ultimate Fighting Championship. She was also a member of the Student Steering Committee for the Democratic National Committee in Nevada.

Flemming is currently a third-year law student at Boyd. Besides serving as Boyd's current BLSA president, she is also serving as Parliamentarian on the Western Region Black Law Students Association's Executive Board and was selected by National Director of Social Action as a member of the Social Action Committee. In her free time Flemming enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
