Borrowing Privileges

Legal research materials work together like a complex machine: for the whole to function, all of the parts must be there. For that reason, most of the collection is non-circulating, and must remain in the library for all to use.

Items that do not circulate include: primary sources such as statutes, case reporters and administrative regulations; looseleaf services, digests, citators, reference materials, periodicals, individual volumes of multi-volume sets, and items listed as "library use only" in the catalog.

Items that do not fall into the above categories may be checked out to law students for a three-week loan period. Items may be renewed for up to two additional three week periods, unless a hold or recall has been requested by another law school affiliated patron. Fines will be charges for overdue items.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves, located behind the Circulation Desk, contain materials placed on reserve either by the Library or a professor. These materials include current periodicals, selected reference books, sample exams, and class assignments. Depending upon the item, reserve material may be checked out for two hours, one day, three days, or seven days, and may be renewed twice if no holds have been placed on them. Law students must present valid I.D. to check out reserve materials. Overdue fines on reserve materials are $1.00 per hour with no maximum.

Some professors use UNLV's E-Reserves system to place items on reserve electronically. This provides students with access to course reserve material from anywhere with an Internet connection. You must register your RebelCard ID with library before you will be granted access to the E-Reserve system.

Interlibrary Loan

Law students may use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to order materials that are not available in our collection. Requests must be submitted via the online "InterLibrary Loan Request."

Law students should not use the online catalog to place ILL requests --these requests go to the Lied Library (the main UNLV campus library) and there will be a delay in obtaining the material you need.

Online Services and Training

Law Library Catalog
The Law Library online catalog is used to access books, journals, magazines, newspapers, microfiche and microfilm. It also allows students to access the holdings of other UNLV libraries, the Community College of Southern Nevada, and the Desert Research Institute. The catalog is designed to allow users to search the system with little or no previous instruction; however, if you need assistance please do not hesitate to ask one of the librarians.

Students can access the catalog from their home or office via the Internet. Click "Library Catalog" in the menu bar at left to initiate a connection.

We have also created a "Quick Reference Guide to Topics and Call Numbers." This page this page links selected topic areas to call number browse searches in the catalog, essentially showing what you would see if you walked up to the shelf in the corresponding call number area.

Hein Online (UNLV Campus Only)
Use Hein Online to find full-text of law review articles. Articles are in .pdf format, so will print as they appeared in the original journal issue. Covers many older journals not available on LegalTrac, Westlaw, or LexisNexis. Check frequently for new additions.

LegalTrac (Law School Bldg. Only)
Use LegalTrac to research law review articles. Covers all major law reviews, and specialty law and bar association journals.

LexisNexis and Westlaw (Password Required)
LexisNexis and Westlaw are available on the computer designated for public access to World Wide Web resources. However, users must have their own account and password to use these services. Students are subject to discipline and/or revocation of their WESTLAW or LEXIS privileges if they use their academic passwords to do research for anything except course-related work and training.

Computer Labs
Two computer labs available for student use are located in the Law Library. A large open lab with 20 terminals is located at the south end of the Main Reading Room. A smaller training lab containing seven terminals is located in the same general area. The terminals in both labs are equipped with word processing software, and also allow students to access e-mail, Lexis, Westlaw, and the Internet. For computer assistance please contact Donald Castle (Ext. 54915).

Other Information

Photocopying
Three self-serve photocopy machines are available for student use. These copiers accept coins, bills and law school authorized copy cards. A change machine is available.

Group Study Rooms
The Library has four group study rooms available for use by law school faculty, students and staff. Study Room use is granted on a first come, first serve basis. During final exams, reservations for study rooms must be made in advance at the Circulation Desk. Reservations can be made by groups of two or more people for up to four hours per day per group.

Suggestions
Feel free to place written suggestions in the suggestion box near the reference desk. If you have concerns and would rather speak to someone in person, please see Diana Gleason, Head of Public Services.
