Binding

Unbound periodicals are kept at the Circulation Desk. Once all issues of a volume have been received, law journals are sent for binding. Upon return from the bindery, newly bound materials are held in the Technical Services Department for a binding quality check and to be entered into the online catalog and labeled. For assistance, contact Candia Little (ext. 52412), Serials Check-In & Bindery Assistant. If a journal is away at the bindery, faculty may wish to consult a reference librarian for assistance in determining whether the desired article is on WESTLAW or LEXIS, or to place an Interlibrary Loan request for the article.

Book Purchases

If you would like to recommend a book for the library collection, contact Matthew Wright (ext. 52409), Collection Development Librarian. Faculty requests are normally processed within 24 hours after approval. We will notify faculty members when a request has been processed and every attempt will be made to accommodate RUSH orders.

Borrowing Privileges

Law School faculty may borrow an unlimited number of items (with unlimited renewals) from the collection at a time. The checkout period is the academic semester with all materials due at the end of each semester. You will receive a list of the materials checked out to you near the end of each semester. Please review the list and return items no longer needed. If you discover items on the list that you have previously returned, please contact Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369) and she will renew items not returned by the end of semester automatically. Reporters, loose-leafs and other materials that do not circulate to non-faculty borrowers may be checked out, but we ask that they be returned as soon as possible to make sure they are available to students and other faculty.

Cataloging

Cataloging of items ordered by faculty receive priority over other materials. If a faculty order was designated RUSH, the material is rush-processed, checked out, and delivered to the professor's mailbox within thirty-six hours of its arrival. All other new materials will be promptly catalogued, processed, and shelved in their appropriate locations. Sean Saxon (ext. 52401), Head of Technical Services, is responsible for all cataloging and processing.

Course Reserves

Faculty may request that books, photocopies, sample exams, videotapes, and other materials be placed on reserve for their classes. The Physical Reserve collection is located at the Circulation Desk. Materials that belong to the Law Library are always placed on Library Reserve, and are available for in-library checkout for two hour periods only. Materials belonging to faculty members are placed on Course Reserve, and may be designated for two-hour, overnight, three-day or seven-day checkout at the professor's discretion. Photocopied materials placed on reserve must meet the requirements of U.S.C. Title 17, the Copyright Act of 1976.

To place an item on Physical Reserve, fill out a "Law Library Reserve Request Form" and bring it to Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369).

Documents can also be placed on Electronic Reserve, thus allowing law students to access the material via the internet. To place an item on Electronic Reserve, please contact Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369).

Please make all reserve requests as early as possible to allow library staff sufficient time to process materials and make them available to students in a timely manner.

Current Awareness

CILP (Current Index to Legal Periodicals):
The Current Index to Legal Periodicals prepared by the University of Washington Law Library is the most up-to-date index of legal periodicals available. CILP is received weekly by e-mail, then printed, and distributed to any faculty members who requests a copy.

If you would like a copy of any article in the CILP, simply circle it and return your copy to Jennifer Gross (ext. 52408) or your faculty liaison, and they will arrange to have it printed out from LEXIS or WESTLAW, or copied from the published edition, (whichever you prefer) and delivered to your office.

Recent Acquisitions:
The Law Library publishes a monthly list of materials recently entered into the library catalog. These are distributed on the faculty e-mail list at the time they are published, and are also available on the web. Select "Recent Acquisitions" in the menu bar at left to view the web version. Contact Tom Boone (ext. 51398) or your faculty liaison if you would like a print copy delivered regularly.

Document Delivery

The Law Library will provide copies of cases or law journal articles to law school faculty at no charge. Materials will be provided in the form of LEXIS or WESTLAW printouts if available, unless a photocopy from the original is specified. Please request copies through a written request to Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369) or your faculty liason. We will deliver materials as soon as possible. LEXIS and WESTLAW printouts can generally be delivered much more quickly than photocopies from books or journals.

If you need a book or journal held by another library on campus, speak to Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369) or your faculty liaison. The book will be checked out in your name and delivered to your office or mailbox.

Faculty Liaison

The Law Library conducts a Faculty Liaison program. Each faculty member is assigned a reference librarian to be their primary contact person in the library. If you are not sure who your liaison is, contact Matthew Wright (ext. 52409).

Feel free to call Mike Beaird (ext. 52404) at any time, especially if your liaison is unavailable, or to discuss any aspect of library policies or services.

Interlibrary Loan

Law School faculty may use Interlibrary Loan to get books, articles and other materials that are not available in our own collection.

To use the I.L.L. service, follow these steps:

  1. Check the UNLV Library Catalog to see if the book, article, case or other item you need is already available on campus. If so, do not request it via I.L.L. Instead, use Document Delivery.
  2. Submit a request using our web-based Interlibrary Loan Form. For your convenience, you may also place your request by contacting Claire Hand (Ext. 52465).

Every effort is made to obtain I.L.L. materials as quickly and efficiently as possible. In many cases we may get items sent or faxed within a day or two of the request. However, the time it takes to acquire an I.L.L. item varies due to many factors outside of our control. For example, if the item you need is very popular, it may be checked out at most or all of the potential lending libraries; if the item is unusual or rare, it may be restricted from circulation at every potential lender and therefore unavailable. For this reason we cannot state a definite time frame in which you can expect to receive materials.

Library Access

Law School faculty have twenty-four hour access to the Law Library. Marlock key cards used to access other Law School Buildings may also be used to access the Law Library after hours.

Detailed information about library hours (such as deviations from the above schedule due to holidays and intersession periods) can be found on the library's General Information page on this web site.

Newspapers

The Law Library subscribes to a variety of popular, academic and legal newspapers. Available daily editions include the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Las Vegas Review Journal, the Las Vegas Sun, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times. Weekly newspapers include the National Law Journal and the American Lawyer. Current issues are displayed in the casual reading area just inside the Reserve Reading Room. Back issues of daily papers are kept for two weeks at the circulation desk. National Law Journal and American Lawyer are kept for 6 months. Longer runs are available at the Lied Library, on the Internet, or on WESTLAW and/or LEXIS, depending on the title.

In-state daily papers are normally received on the date published. Out-of-state dailies sometimes arrive a day or two after publication. Weekly publications arrive as scheduled by the publishers.

Online Services

Law Library Catalog

The Law Library online catalog is used to access books, journals, magazines, newspapers, microfiche and microfilm. It also provides access to the holdings of other UNLV libraries, the Community College of Southern Nevada, and the Desert Research Institute.

Law Faculty can access the catalog from their offices or from home via the Internet. Click on "Library Catalog" in the menu bar at left to initiate a connection.

We have also created a "Quick Reference Guide to Topics and Call Numbers" that links selected topic areas to call number browse searches in the catalog, essentially showing what you would see if you walked up to the shelf in the corresponding call number area.

Finally, the UNLV library website has a "Search" page providing links to online journal indexes, the catalogs of other libraries and library consortia, and so on.

The catalog is designed to allow users to search the system with little or no previous instruction, however, if you need assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Reference Desk (ext. 52420) or any Reference Librarian.

Hein Online (UNLV Campus Only)

Use Hein Online to find full-text of law review articles. Articles are in .pdf format, so will print as they appeared in the original journal issue. The database covers many older journals not available on LegalTrac, Westlaw, or LexisNexis. Check frequently for new additions.

LegalTrac (Law School Bldg. Only)

The LegalTrac database can be used to research law review articles. LegalTrac covers all major law reviews, law and bar association journals, as well as legal newspapers from 1980 to the present.

LexisNexis and Westlaw (Password Required)

All faculty are issued personal passwords to access LexisNexis and Westlaw. Contact Tom Boone (ext. 51398) if you have not received your password or if you have encountered a problem using it. Tom, or any other Reference Librarian, can assist with search questions.

Publication Information

To obtain information about a particular publication or publisher contact either Martha Hard-Batzloff (monographs, ext. 52411) or Xin Mai (serials, ext. 54916).

Routing Material

To request routing of a law review, journal, or other subscription material, contact Candia Little (ext. 52412). Prompt return of these issues is important so that students and other faculty members can have access to the latest materials, and so that they can be bound.

If you will need an article for more than three or four days, please call Beverly Galloway (ext. 52369) or your faculty liaison to request a photocopy of the article(s) you are interested in. See the section above on Document Delivery for more information. When returning routed issues, please do not leave them at the Circulation desk. Instead, return them to Xin or place them in the box labeled "Technical Services" in the faculty secretaries' area on the 4th floor.
