The Honorable Bruce A. Markell
The Honorable Bruce A. Markell joined the Florida State faculty in summer 2013. He previously was a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Nevada and a Member of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is also a member of the Board of Editors for Collier on Bankruptcy, and has been active in bankruptcy and commercial law reform nationally and internationally.
Immediately prior to his appointment to the bench in 2004, Judge Markell was the Doris S. and Theodore B. Lee Professor at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Prior to that, he was a professor at Indiana University – Bloomington Law School. Before joining academia, he practiced law as a partner at Sidley & Austin’s Los Angeles office. He has visited at several schools, including the University of Tokyo, the Queensland University of Technology, and the Harvard Law School, where he was the Bruce W. Nichols Visiting Professor of Law.
Judge Markell has published numerous books and articles in bankruptcy, commercial law and contracts. He is a member of the American Law Institute, a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and a charter member of the International Insolvency Institute.
